LAWRENCE W. “MR. MAC” MCALPINE JR.
Lawrence W. McAlpine, Jr., 83 of Peachtree City, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on December 5, 2006. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey but lived most of his life in Savannah. He retired form the Seaboard Coastline Railroad after 40 years. The last 14 years of his employment, he was General Chairman for the Railway Carmen’s Union.
He was in the United States Coast Guard Reserves from 1942 to 1946 where he saw a lot of action in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters and was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. Mr. McAlpine was a member of Whitefield United Methodist Church in Savannah for over 50 years where he was a Sunday School teacher, Methodist Youth Fellowship counselor, and head of the Pastor-Parrish committee for many years. He was also a Methodist Lay preacher. He moved to Peachtree City to live with his daughter and her family in 2004. He was known as “Mr. Mac” to many Peachtree residents who would go by on the Lake Peachtree cart path and wave at him as he sat out on his patio every day. He would give popsicles to children whose moms would bring them up to say “Hello”
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lois Lanier McAlpine.
Surviving are, a son and daughter in law, Larry and Janice McAlpine of Savannah, daughter and son in law, Lois and Henry Higgins of Acworth,, daughter and son in law, Lucie and Lee Davis of Peachtree City, daughter, Laurette Edenfield of Sharpsburg, a brother, George McAlpine of Carey, NC, his sisters, Josephine Hanly of Solvang, CA and Teddy Ronan of Oxnard, CA, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, December 8, 2006 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel
Funeral Services will be Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel with his grandson, Reverend Chris Davis officiating.
Burial will be in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
